Have you ever seen people tasting wine before? If you want to learn how to taste wine properly then take some notes on how it is done. The first thing they do is twirl the wine while at the same time tilting the glass. Once this is done they place their nose in the wine glass and take a deep breath then rinse the wine around their mouth. Finally they will either spit it out or swallow up the wine. Spitting the wine out is an important custom so don’t think the wine tastes bad just because they spit it out.
Wine tasters tip the wine glass so that they can determine a wine’s age. Tasting the wine and it’s colour is very important as it checks its clarity. The newer wines have a lighter colorful edge while the older wine have a darker colour, you will see this when you have tilted the glass. White wines can be examined by looking right at the glass. White wines that glitter like diamonds suggest a greater clarity.
By swirling the wine in the glass, you can test the wine’s consistency. One of the things to check the consistency of the wine is to twirl the wine around the glass, the wine would stick to the side of the glass if it has greater consistency.
The odor of wines is tested by swirling it on the glass and then sniffing its vapours deeply. You may be able to smell either licorice, cocoa or even mint, this would suggest the wine was young. If you can smell vinegar then that would indicate the wine was off so avoid even tasting these.
You can test the flavour by slurping a bit of wine and roll it around your tongue. Place the wine at the center of your tongue and gargle it to release its flavor. If the wine is sweet you will feel a tingling on the tip of your tongue. Acidic wines will give you a pins and needles sensations at the sides of your tongue. If you feel dryness all all through your mouth then this suggests a wine with high tannic acid. Considered a natural preservative tannin can usually be found in the newest wines. The best way to sample wine is to drink a tiny amount at a time. If a wine is of good quality then the taste should mill around in your mouth.
Connoisseurs are considered as the experts in wine tasting. Not anyone can measure the wine’s character even if they follow the so-called rituals because it takes time and experience to discover the best wines in the globe.
